The students plant seeds of different legumes and watch them grow. Through this project, students explore how different plants can be identified, and how to care for them. They also learn about the cultural significance legumes in Nepal, celebrated through events such as Qwanti Khane Din.
Grade: 2
Students plant seeds of different types of chilis for this project. They learn about how to care for fruit-bearing plants, and the variety that can be present in a single species. They learn about the taste that makes chilli plants unique, and the different ways it can be used, whether raw, cooked, dried or pickled.
Grade: 3
Students carefully observe the structure and growth of flowering plants through Marigold plantation. As marigolds are incredibly important in Nepali culture, they also learn about the cultural significance of these flowers, which are ready to flower around the time of major festivities.
Grade: 4
Rice is so important in Nepal that almost every aspect of its plantation is marked on the national calendar. Students start Paddy Plantation on National Paddy Day. They learn about how Asian agriculture is shaped by this grain, and the long and complex process of harvesting it. The end result is a delicious Kheer, where the students are able to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The rice paddies planted by Grade 4 students are a breeding ground for various animals. By collecting and raising the frogspawn from these paddy fields, the students of Grade 5 start their exploration of the fascinating world of amphibians. In addition to expanding their scientific vocabulary, they also learn about all the folk tales that these interesting animals have inspired.
